A Clean Room is a space designed to ensure a high cleanliness environment and is widely used in Semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and other fields. In such an environment, any factors that may affect cleanliness need to be strictly controlled. The question of whether nail polish can be applied in a clean room must be analyzed in depth in combination with international standards and industry specifications.

Cleanliness level and pollution control of modular clean rooms

According to the international standard ISO 14644-1, the cleanliness level of clean rooms is divided into multiple categories, mainly based on the concentration of particulate matter in the air. For example, ISO5 clean rooms require that the number of particles per cubic meter of air must be controlled below 3,520 (≥0.5 microns), while the ISO7 standard requires a limit of less than 352,000 particles. This shows that as the cleanliness level increases, pollution control in clean rooms becomes more stringent.

Applying nail polish may change the cleanliness of the cleanroom because nail polish releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the drying process. These compounds not only increase the concentration of particulate matter in the air, but may also interfere with sensitive experimental or production processes. In addition, the application and drying process of nail polish may cause the shedding of tiny particles, which is unacceptable in a high-cleanliness environment. Therefore, many Cleanroom standards explicitly prohibit the application of nail polish in cleanrooms.

Nail Polish Ingredients and Potential Impacts

Nail polish ingredients usually contain solvents, resins, pigments, and other additives. These ingredients may cause contamination in cleanrooms. For example, common nail polish solvents such as acetone and ethanol evaporate quickly in the air, producing gases and tiny particles. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the concentration of VOCs in some nail polishes can reach 50-70%, which is extremely unfavorable for the cleanliness requirements of cleanrooms.

In cleanrooms, operators' hands and nails must be kept clean to reduce the generation of particles. According to iso 14644-5, all personnel entering the clean room must wear special clean clothes and equipped with gloves that meet the standards to reduce the release of skin particles and other sources of pollution. Therefore, applying nail polish will not only violate this standard, but may also cause operators to affect the safety and effectiveness of products when conducting experiments or production.

and related standards

From a comprehensive analysis, it is inappropriate to apply nail polish in a modular clean room, not only because of the strict requirements for cleanliness, but also to ensure the smooth progress of the experiment and production process. Clean room managers should strengthen employee training to ensure that each employee understands and complies with relevant Clean room standards and operating procedures.

List of relevant standards and specifications

  • 1. iso 14644-1: Classification of air cleanliness for clean rooms and related controlled environments

  • 2. ISO 14644-5: Operating specifications for clean rooms

  • 3. EPA nail polish composition standards

  • 4. ISO limit standards for volatile organic compounds

By following these standards and specifications, companies can ensure high cleanliness in Clean room environments, thereby improving product quality and experimental accuracy.
