The difference between Stainless Steel FFU and Powder‑Coated FFU

Stainless Steel FFU
Stainless Steel FFU
VS
Powder‑Coated FFU
Powder‑Coated FFU

Stainless steel FFUs are designed for wet, harsh and very clean environments. Stainless steel, in the form of SS304/316L housing, resists corrosion, repeated wipe‑downs with disinfectants and certain chemicals, so it is preferred for pharmaceutical, food processing and high‑humidity cleanrooms. Powder Coated FFUs are suitable for most electronics or general cleanroom use where the air must be clean but surfaces are not constantly washed or exposed to aggressive cleaners.

Stainless Steel FFU

  • Typical Use: Recommended for GMP pharma, food and biotech applications that require frequent wet cleaning and chemical disinfection in high‑humidity cleanrooms.

  • Material & Hygiene: SS304/316L housing with a smooth, non‑porous surface that is easy to clean without damaging a coating and offers strong corrosion resistance.

  • Cost & Lifetime: Higher initial investment but better long‑term durability and hygiene, especially where harsh cleaners are in constant use.

Powder‑Coated FFU

  • Typical Use: Common in electronics, assembly and general cleanroom applications where surfaces are not regularly washed down.

  • Material & Hygiene: Made from spray‑painted steel that relies on the coating for rust protection; strong acidic or alkaline conditions can cause peeling and surface deterioration over time.

  • Cost & Lifetime: Lower upfront price and acceptable in dry environments, but overall less durable and less hygienic than stainless steel in long‑term use.

Customer feedback reflects our value—take a look at what our customers say about our products and services.

“We ordered Deiiang’s 2x4 Stainless Steel FFU for our GMP upgrade. These FFUs are of very good build quality and provide a stable airflow. They also fit perfectly into our existing T-grid ceiling.”

Michael Chen, Process Engineer

“Thanks again for the Low Noise Stainless Steel FFU units, they’re making a big difference in our lab. The reduced noise levels mean we can now talk to each other at the benches, which is great.”

Sarah Lopez, Cleanroom Manager

“We used Deiiang’s EC Motor Stainless Steel FFU on a large electronics line. Commissioning was easy, the units consume less power than the old AC units, and BMS integration worked as expected. Good value for a long term project.”

Ravi Patel, Project Director, EMS Factory

“Chose HEPA Stainless Steel FFU modules for an ISO 5 filling area. Deiiang provided complete test reports and documentation, which made our IQ/OQ much easier. No issues with leak testing so far, and surfaces clean well with our standard disinfectants.”

Anna Müller, QA & Validation

“Combining Ceiling Mounted Stainless Steel FFU 2x4 units with Ceiling Mounted Stainless Steel FFU 2x2 units in a retrofit project worked well. The FFUs were the correct size, achieving a good balance of airflow, and were delivered on time in accordance with our agreed schedule.”

James Wong, Facility Engineer

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a Stainless Steel FFU and when do I need it?

A Stainless Steel FFU is ceiling mounted. It houses a fan paired with HEPA or ULPA filters within stainless steel construction. Opt for these units over painted alternatives for pharmaceutical, biotech and food cleanrooms. They withstand frequent chemical cleaning and humid conditions, delivering corrosion resistance to meet ISO 14644 and GMP standards.

How does a Stainless Steel FFU clean the air in a cleanroom?

Air travels through HEPA or ULPA filters before releasing steady downward airflow. When several Stainless Steel FFUs are fitted to the ceiling, they create balanced airflow to continuously capture particles from staff, machinery and production activity.

Should I use HEPA or ULPA filters in a Stainless Steel FFU?

H13/H14 HEPA filters are suitable for the majority of ISO 5–8 cleanrooms as they meet the requirements of ISO 14644 and IEST (Institute of Environmental Sciences & Technology).ULPA filters are often used in high-tech environments such as Semiconductor cleanrooms or in areas with high risk of infection where very high levels of cleaning are required. Their high cost, together with high pressure resistance, must be offset against their filter performance in designing a cleanroom.

What motor and control options are available for Stainless Steel FFUs?

Supporting conventional AC motors and efficient EC motors, Deiiang Stainless Steel FFUs support a wide variety of different applications.EC variants are often preferred in GMP environments. They can be controlled via 0–10V, Modbus and BMS, allowing for constant airflow and monitoring of performance.

How do I maintain a Stainless Steel FFU and how often are filters changed?

Casing cleaning and fan inspection form the core of the basic maintenance required for air handling units. The service required for filters is as follows: pre-filters require replacement every 3-6 months. Primary HEPA/ULPA filters are required to undergo annual pressure and leak tests with replacement recommended between 1-3 years.

Can Deiiang Stainless Steel FFUs support audits and qualification?

Yes. We provide airflow, noise and filter leakage test data as well as material certificates. This test data supports completion of all IQ/OQ/PQ testing for GMP and ISO audits. On larger projects we work with integrators to deliver Stainless Steel FFU systems that are easy to validate.

How to choose Stainless Steel FFU?

1. Define Your Cleanroom Class and Process

Confirm ISO or GMP standards, particle requirements and your industry.

The following issues need to be decided upon to define your cleanroom: H13/H14 HEPA filters or ULPA filters, required airflow, FFU density made of Stainless Steel etc.

2. Match Airflow and Size to Your Layout

FFU Dimensions: List of Standard FFU Sizes (for Ceiling Grids) 2' x 4', 2' x 2', 1200x600, 600x600.

Discuss the unit airflow and required ACH values with your HVAC engineer.

3. Specify Material and Hygiene Level

SS304 for the majority of clean rooms. 316/316L where there are to be frequent applications of strong disinfectants or in areas of high salt content in the air.

Check surface finish, welding quality and other factors that affect compatibility with certain cleaning chemicals.

4. Select Motor and Control Strategy

Our Stainless Steel FFUs are designed to fit into the most controlled of GMP environments (ISO) using the most energy efficient EC motors available.

Options: manual, 0–10V, Modbus/BACnet, BMS linkage.

5. Check Noise and Operator Comfort

Stainless Steel FFU’s with low noise ratings are preferred for continuously staffed areas and areas where workers are sensitive to noise.

6. Clarify Testing, Certificates, and Documentation

A detailed account of factory testing data such as airflow, pressure, noise, filter leak testing etc.

Material certificates and other relevant documents may be required for IQ/OQ testing at regulated sites.

7. Plan Maintenance and Filter Replacement

Check filter access, filter change out frequency and required spare filters.

Confirm delivery lead times of replacement filters in your region.
